Heather Keating, a girl from Ireland, went to see her gynecologist after noticing abnormal bleeding between periods and after sex.
A girl was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 24. She shared her story on Facebook to encourage all women to get regular checkups and take care of their health.
Namely, when Ms Keating noticed abnormal bleeding between periods and after sex, she went to her gynaecologist. However she was not sent for further examinations but she was told to come back when she was 25 instead.
“Because I was 24 I was not entitled to a free smear”, she wrote on Facebook.
When the bleeding got worse and she became anaemic she was referred to a gynaecologist, and then an oncologist who eventually diagnosed her with cervical cancer.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I had cancer”. “They called me into the room and there were Kleenex on the table. Then I knew that the news is not good, “Heather shared the moment when she heard the terrible news about her health.
“I was told that I had cervical cancer. I had to go on further analyzes to check if the cancer has spread. “
Symptoms of cervical cancer:
Obvious symptoms of cervical cancer do not appear until the cancer has begun to grow. It is therefore very important to get regular checkups including vaginal swabs to determine the type of secretion, and Pap test as well.
Only when the disease progresses there may be bleeding, usually after sexual intercourse. Occasional bleeding between periods shouldn’t set off any alarm bells.
Thankfully, the cancer of the 24-year-old was confined to her cervix, and was treatable with surgery. Four weeks after surgery, Heather received the good news that the cancer is completely removed and that she is healthy now.
“It was the worst experience of my life. No one should ever have to go through with it”, “she wrote. She shared her story on Facebook to help women learn the symptoms of this awful disease.
Her Facebook post was liked and shared thousands of times, with people praising her bravery.
